Arkansas State University

Located in Jonesboro, a 56 mile drive east of Osceola, Arkansas State University (ASU) enjoys a reputation as the preeminent institution of higher education in the Arkansas Delta and the only comprehensive public university located in this region. Dedicated to teaching, research and service, the university provides students with the broad educational foundations that help develop critical thinking and analytical skills, decision-making capabilities, and communications skills. ASU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, as well as 11 other accrediting organizations. In addition, the university holds membership in 22 organizations that support the highest educational standards.

Founded in 1909 by the Arkansas Legislature as a regional agricultural training school, the institution began offering a two-year college program in 1918. It was renamed "First District Agricultural and Mechanical College" in 1925, established its four-year degree program in 1930, and was renamed "Arkansas State College" in 1933. The legislature granted university status in 1967.

ASU has an annual budget exceeding $71.7 million, of which $37 million is payroll. Average ACT score for entering freshmen is 21.6 for the Fall 1995 semester.

The ASU campus covers approximately 90 acres. The extensive physical plant includes 16 classroom/laboratory facilities, five residence halls and 13 administrative and service buildings.

Programs at the specialist's, master's, bachelor's, and associate's degree level are available through the various colleges: Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Communications, Education, Fine Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, the University College and the Department of Engineering. ASU Began offering a doctoral degree in education leadership in the fall of 1992.
